Keep Press Free

Support The Roanoke Rambler
The Roanoke Rambler was founded to deliver unbiased, factual, and hard-hitting local journalism free from influence and agendas. No spin, no angles. Just committed journalists setting down the truth in print.
We’re free to read— you can sign up here for our weekly newsletter—but running a news outlet isn’t. Your monthly contribution keeps the lights on and the publication alive. Wondering what it takes to keep independent news independent? We’re transparent about our costs and where we get our funding.

Your Support Matters
- Our agenda is the truth. We don’t take money from sources that compromise principled reporting. We’re reader-funded, independent and ethical.
- Each weekly issue costs about $4,400 to produce. Monthly reader digital memberships keep us sustainable.
- Memberships are our main source of revenue. Readers directly support reporting, editing, photography and distribution. Check out our financial reports.
- Your contribution helps us hire reporters, expand coverage and report stories without fear or favor.

Over 100 Years of Combined Investigative Journalism Experience
The Roanoke Rambler is owned, written and produced by our team of veteran investigative journalists supported by a bench of outstanding freelance reporters. Together, we bring a combined 100+ years of investigative journalism experience to every edition of The Roanoke Rambler.
Henri Gendreau: Henri is The Rambler's publisher and founding editor. He served as a reporter at The Roanoke Times from 2018 until 2021. He has written for WIRED, Bloomberg News, and several newspapers.
Todd Jackson: Todd is The Rambler's managing editor and covers city government. Before joining in 2025, Todd spent 30 years at The Roanoke Times as a reporter, editor and New River Valley bureau chief.
Jeff Sturgeon: Jeff leads advertising and business sponsorships for The Rambler and covers stories on business, government and accountability. Before joining in 2024, Jeff worked for 29 years at The Roanoke Times as a reporter.
Sinclair Holian: Sinclair covers segregation in Roanoke as The Rambler's inaugural Report for America corps member. Your donation to match our RFA grant helps keep her writing stories.
We have also received invaluable support from investigative reporter Mary Bishop, a Roanoke Times journalist from 1983-2002.

FAQs About Supporting The Rambler
What is The Roanoke Rambler?
The Roanoke Rambler is a local and investigative news site and weekly newsletter serving the people of Roanoke and the region. We are independent and journalist-owned. To learn more about our vision, please visit our About Us page.
How does my membership support The Roanoke Rambler?
Memberships provide us with a reliable and predictable source of revenue. Readers who value hyper-local, accountability journalism make up the bulk of our support.
At least 70 percent of our expenses go directly to employees or to pay our freelance journalists. The remaining 30 percent of our costs go to marketing, paying for public records requests, and the technology that makes this website and newsletter possible.
Do you take checks?
Yep! Please send to The Roanoke Rambler, P.O. Box 323, Vinton, VA 24179
Can I do a one-time donation in addition to, or in lieu of, a subscription?
You sure can! Every dollar counts and goes straight back into providing local journalism. You can donate through this portal. Donations accepted through this form are tax-deductible!
I want to give a gift subscription!
Great! Thanks for the support. Please fill out this form, and you're all set!
Is my membership tax-deductible?
While sustaining memberships are not tax-deductible, you can make tax-deductible donations to our local news fund, thanks to a fiscal sponsorship with Report for America (dba The GroundTruth Project — EIN: 46-0908502).
For more information about making large gifts, please contact Jeff Sturgeon at jeff@roanokerambler.com
Can my business sponsor or advertise in The Rambler?
You sure can. You can find more information about our advertising and sponsorship opportunities at this page.
Why are some stories behind a paywall?
From our launch in September 2021 through March 2023, all of our journalism required a subscription. So, some of our archived stories may still be behind that paywall. Since March 2023, all our journalism has been freely accessible.
Who is giving you money?
We believe strongly that you should know how your journalism is being funded, and by whom. To that end, we publicly post the names and contribution ranges for memberships or gifts of $200 or more. Here is a list of our current supporters.
