This weekend
- Thursday, 10/23 through Sunday, 10/26 — “The Play that Goes Wrong” presented by Attic Productions (7490 Roanoke Rd., Fincastle). A riotous farce where a drama about murder and mystery turns into total mayhem. From collapsing sets to misplaced lines (and plenty of surprises in between), you’ll be laughing from curtain to curtain. ($)
- Friday, 10/24 through Saturday, 10/25 — Haunted History: A Fincastle Ghost Tour presented by Botetourt Historical Society and Historic Fincastle starting at the Botetourt County Historical Society & Museum (26 East Main St., Fincastle). ($)
- Saturday 10/25 through Sunday 10/26 — Zoo Boo at Mill Mountain Zoo (Mill Mountain Spur, Roanoke). Enjoy creepy crafts and engaging zookeeper chats while trick or treating at vendor booths where you can learn about local organizations and collect some treats. ($)
- Final weekend — Salem’s Spooky Scavenger Hunt presented by Downtown Salem and Hopetree Family Services in downtown Salem. Friendly little witches are hidden in twelve of Salem’s downtown businesses. Can you find them all? Pick up a passport from any participating business and collect stamps from each place as you spot our witchy little friends. A fun, family-friendly way to celebrate the spooky season while supporting our amazing local shops.
- Final weekend — Jeter Fall Festival (181 Blue Ridge Blvd., Roanoke). Corn maze, hay rides, pumpkin train, barnyard animals, giant slides & jump pad, farm games, and more. Enjoy delicious eats like hamburgers, hotdogs, grilled chicken sandwiches, kettle corn, cider doughnuts, apple cider, and a variety of Virginia Grown and Virginia’s Finest products in our Country Store. - 2 to 4 p.m. — Trades & Manufacturing Expo presented by Virginia Western Community College at the EnVision Center (2607 Salem Turnpike NW, Roanoke). During this Expo, you will have the opportunity to meet with faculty, learn about career opportunities from local business partners, and find out how easy it is to enroll and start a new career.

Join the Gainsboro Branch Library and the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project as we celebrate and remember the rich history of the Gainsboro Branch Library. Drop in for light refreshments and an exhibit from the library’s past. Share your memories of the library with the launch of our Gainsboro Branch Library Written History Project.
- 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Festival of Light Workshop: Bluebird of Happiness pt 2 at Morningside Urban Farm (917 Morgan Ave. SE, Roanoke). One man’s trash, another man’s treasure. In this workshop, artist Jane Gabrielle will show you how to craft a treasured lamp from plastic bottles. Bring pictures of loved ones printed on paper to create remembrance luminaries. Join in every Thursday in October for FREE workshops focused on making art projects in preparation for the Fall Harvest Festival of Light on Nov. 1.

- 9 a.m. (costume check-in at 8:30) — Spooky Sprint 5k starting at Wasena Park (1119 Wiley Dr., Roanoke). Benefits the West End Center for Youth. Participants of all ages are invited to run, walk, or roll in their favorite costumes and enjoy a festive fall atmosphere. ($)
- 10 a.m. to noon — Downtown Roanoke Candy Crawl presented by Macaroni Kid (locations throughout downtown Roanoke). Participating businesses and farmers market vendors will hand out candy. Some businesses may also offer special activities, discounts, games, contests, and more. This is organized trick or treating; adult supervision is required and streets will not be closed. - 10 a.m. to noon — Main Street Trick or Treating in Salem (from Academy St. to College Ave.) Businesses participating will have a pumpkin placed in their window, so that is your signal for trick-or-treating approval! Come dressed up in your best Halloween costume for a morning of fun with friends and family.
- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Blue Ridge Folklife Festival at Blue Ridge Institute and Museum (20 Museum Dr., Ferrum). Since 1973, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival has presented authentic regional folk music, craftspeople, draft horse and dog handlers, car builders, tractor restorers, country cooks, moonshine tale tellers, and much more. - Noon to 5 p.m. — Too Many Brushes: An Art Supply Exchange and Sale Event at Art on 1st (300 1st St. SW, Roanoke). Do you have too many brushes, too much paint, too many canvases? Bring them to Art on 1st and drop them off on Friday, October 24 from 11 to 4:00 p.m. or Saturday morning, October 25 from 10 a.m. to noon and donate them to Art on 1st. - 2 to 5 p.m. — Trick or Treat at Big Lick Brewing Co. (409 Salem Ave. SW, Roanoke). Fun for the whole family. At this event, Big Lick Brewing will be donating to the Life Ring Foundation Fighting Kids Cancer Campaign. Join us for an evening of spooky vibes and magical lights as we parade, sing, shout, dance, and create together for the first ever Old Southwest Halloween Lantern Parade. This is a pedestrian-only parade in which people carry hand-crafted or traditional lanterns of any kind; see the link above for details. - Nov. 12 — Screening: “We Are Fugazi from Washington, D.C.” at the Grandin Theatre (1310 Grandin Rd. SW, Roanoke). Created to commemorate the 20 years that have passed since DC-based post-hardcore band Fugazi’s last live appearance (Nov. 4, 2002, at The Forum in London) ... This unique archival assemblage celebrates the fans and their cameras, as much as the band itself — a collision/ collusion of the ephemeral moment on stage, and the moments captured on camera. ($)

- Through Nov. 1 — “In the Company of Animals” by Lisa Acciai at LinDor Arts (306 1st St. SW, Roanoke). A phenomenal animal and bird artist presents her favorites for the season, all in one collection.
- Through Dec. 12 — “Curator Off Duty” Exhibition at Olin Hall Galleries at Roanoke College (240 High St. Salem). This is an open exhibition for any and all artists living in Virginia. This exhibition invites artists and creators of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds to submit a work of art to be shown at Olin Hall Galleries. Each submission must fit within one cubic foot. Curator Off Duty aims to unite the Virginia visual arts community through diversity and inclusion.
- Saturdays through Dec. 27 — Downtown Roanoke Food & Cultural Tour starting at 11:15 a.m. from Hotel Roanoke (110 Shenandoah Ave., Roanoke). A walking tour that connects Roanoke's local food scene with the city's colorful history. Visit six food-tasting locations within the historic and vibrant downtown historic district. Delicious samplings, enough for a hearty meal for most, are served from locally-owned eateries at iconic historic locations. ($)
