This weekend

  • Thursday, 10/9 through Sunday, 10/12 — “Monstersongs” presented by Showtimers Theatre (2067 McVitty Rd., Roanoke). Late at night, long after being tucked in, The Kid opens up a spooky comic... and a portal to the world of well-known monsters. In this pop-rock concert, the monsters tell their stories of being misunderstood and taken for granted. Note: the Oct. 12 showing will be a sensory-friendly experience. 
  • Friday, 10/10 through Saturday, 10/11 — “How to Host a Sleepover in 10 Easy Steps” written by Mattie Tindall ‘23, directed by Wendy-Marie Martin, presented by the Hollins University Theatre in the Botetourt Reading Room (7916 Williamson Rd., Roanoke). This comedy centers on five young girls at the ultimate sleepover during summer break – right before they embark on their final year of middle school — capturing the joy, magic, and bittersweet moments of growing up. Performed as a stage reading.
  • Friday, 10/10 through Sunday, 10/13 — Heritage Arts Tattoo Convention at the Berglund Special Events Center (710 Williamson Rd., Roanoke). This show is geared up to spotlight some of the most talented artists in this craft today from all over the world. A weekend that will be backed with talented artists, live entertainment and local brews. Tickets are available at the Berglund Center the day of the show. ($)
  • 10/11 — Opening day: Salem’s Spooky Scavenger Hunt presented by Downtown Salem and Hopetree Family Services in downtown Salem. Friendly little witches are hidden in twelve of Salem’s downtown businesses. Can you find them all? Pick up a passport from any participating business and collect stamps from each place as you spot our witchy little friends. A fun, family-friendly way to celebrate the spooky season while supporting our amazing local shops. Runs through Oct. 31
  • Saturday, 10/11 through Monday, 10/13 — Level 4 Open: B 14's OUTDOOR Singles Fall Challenge at Hidden Valley Country Club (2500 Romar Rd., Salem). Matches will start at 8:30 a.m. until completed.   • 4 p.m. — Gaymer Day at Roanoke Diversity Center (425 Campbell Ave. SW., Roanoke). Hang out with other local young adults in the lounge, watch the latest music videos, play board games, chat and mingle. Bring your controllers and play your friends with our Nintendo Switch or Playstation, or start an RPG, card games and board games.
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Festival of Light Workshop: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle at Morningside Urban Farm (917 Morgan Ave. SE, Roanoke). One man’s trash, another man’s treasure. In this workshop, artist Jane Gabrielle will show you how to craft a treasured lamp from plastic bottles. Bring pictures of loved ones printed on paper to create remembrance luminaries. Join in every Thursday in October for FREE workshops focused on making art projects in preparation for the Fall Harvest Festival of Light on Nov. 1.

This year’s program will feature Stephen Wilson, Executive Director of the Historic St. John’s Church Foundation in Richmond, who will present “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death! Patrick Henry’s Iconic Speech 250 Years Later.” Reserve your seats in advance.   • 4 to 9 p.m. — Carnival of Chaos 1.5 Year Birthday Party at Motel Studios (128 Albemarle Ave. SE, Roanoke). This fall carnival will be packed with spooky fun, art-fueled nonsense, and enough chaos to summon a ghost (or at least a raccoon in a crop top). Expect: flash tattoos, carnival games, pumpkin painting, fall snacks, a costume contest, music, dancing, and a little bit of mayhem. All are welcome. Costumes HIGHLY encouraged.   • 5 to 8 p.m. — LEAP Apples & Acorns at Hurt Park Community Garden (1718 Salem Ave. SW, Roanoke). Join LEAP and Em Shawish to learn how to identify different trees and forageable plants. The German Baptist Brethren organized and operated what became known as the Unionist Underground Railroad (“UUR”) during the Civil War.   • Oct. 17, 7 p.m. — Live music: “Let the Pipes Resound” performed by the Blacksburg Master Chorale at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church (1837 Grandin Rd., Roanoke). Celebrating the best of what the instrument and voices can do together, with music by Brahms, Haydn, Rutter, and many more. The Blacksburg Master Chorale will be joined by the Blacksburg Children’s Chorale for a portion of the performance.   • Through Oct. 12 — “Million Dollar Quartet” at Mill Mountain Theatre (1 Market Sq., Roanoke). Features a glorious score of rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, R&B, and country hits, performed live onstage by world-class actors and musicians. Songs include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Hound Dog,” and more. ($)
  • Through Nov. 1 — “In the Company of Animals” by Lisa Acciai at LinDor Arts (306 1st St. SW, Roanoke). A phenomenal animal and bird artist presents her favorites for the season, all in one collection. 
  • Through Dec. 12 — “Curator Off Duty” Exhibition at Olin Hall Galleries at Roanoke College (240 High St. Salem). This is an open exhibition for any and all artists living in Virginia. This exhibition invites artists and creators of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds to submit a work of art to be shown at Olin Hall Galleries. The only curatorial criteria is that each submission must fit within one cubic foot. Curator Off Duty aims to unite the Virginia visual arts community through diversity and inclusion. Open through December 12.
  • Saturdays through Dec. 27 — Downtown Roanoke Food & Cultural Tour starting at 11:15 a.m. from Hotel Roanoke (110 Shenandoah Ave., Roanoke). A walking tour that connects Roanoke's local food scene with the city's colorful history. Visit six food-tasting locations within the historic and vibrant downtown historic district. Delicious samplings, enough for a hearty meal for most, are served from locally-owned eateries at iconic historic locations. ($)
