This weekend

  • Thursday through Sunday, 3/5 to 3/8 — “The Shark is Broken” presented by Showtimers Community Theatre (2067 McVitty Rd. SW, Roanoke). Set on the cold open water during the 1974 filming of Jaws, The Shark is Broken takes a behind-the-scenes look at three actors stuck on a boat — and with each other — as the mechanical shark keeps breaking down.   • Friday through Saturday, 3/6 to 3/7 — Roanoke Arts Pop! at the Taubman Museum of Art (110 Salem Ave. SE, Roanoke). Thirty arts and cultural organizations from around the region will offer pop-up performances and interactive activities throughout this free, family-friendly weekend. From the performing and visual arts to science and technology, and from literature to our region’s rich history, come discover what makes Roanoke the cultural heart of Southwest Virginia.
  • Friday through Sunday, 3/6 to 3/8 — Salem Library Spring Book Sale (28 E. Main St., Salem). Thousands of donated books are available. 
  • Saturday through Sunday, 3/7 to 3/8 — Sinful Signings Book Con at the Berglund Special Events Center (710 Williamson Rd., Roanoke). Two full days of signings with over 100 authors, narrators, vendors, and featured guests ready to meet, greet, and connect with you. Plus panels, Q&A sessions, and an enchanting ball. ($)

Wednesday, March 4

  • 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Parenting the Love and Logic Way presented by Carilion Children’s Pediatric Medicine (4348 Electric Rd., Roanoke, in the Mill Mountain Room). For parents and guardians of children of any age. Parenting is certainly rewarding but it can also be frustrating. Raising happy, healthy, and well-adjusted children can sometimes seem overwhelming.   • 6 to 9:15 p.m. — Women’s History Month Film Festival: "Erin Brockovich" hosted by volunteer community programmers Bonnie Chavez and Getra Hanes at the Grandin Theatre (1310 Grandin Rd. SW, Roanoke). An enthusiastic law firm secretary works tirelessly to gain justice for a small town wrecked by a utility company's pollution.

  • 7:30 p.m. — Opening Night: “9 to 5: The Musical” presented by Mill Mountain Theatre (1 Market Sq., Roanoke). Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Through March 22. ($)

  • 7:30 a.m. — Future of Talent Summit presented by Get2KnowNoke at Roanoke College (221 College Ln., Roanoke). If you play a role in hiring, developing, or preparing talent—from employers and HR teams to faculty, career services, and workforce partners—this event is designed for you.   • 5 to 9 p.m. — Opening reception: “The Eclectic Realism Paintings of Mark Young: A Solo Exhibition” by Roanoke area artist Mark Young at Art on 1st (300 1st St. SW, Roanoke). The breadth of subjects Mark paints include people, animals, landscapes, seascapes, still life, figurative works, imaginary works, and copies of “old Master” works, all painted in a classical realism style, where the ability to draw, understand composition, perspective, light, form, shadow and the handling of color is what matters most. 
  • 5 to 9 p.m. — Casual Gaming Night in room 418 at the Roanoke Higher Education Center (108 North Jefferson St., Roanoke). Monopoly: 1935 edition. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own games as well. Snacks and drinks provided.

Native to Poland, she currently lives in Roanoke, where she paints, teaches art in her downtown studio and is involved in the local art scene.

  • 8 a.m. — Crooked Road 24 Hr. Ultra and Ultra Relay at Waid Park (701 Waid Park Rd., Rocky Mount, VA). This race takes place on a scenic, mostly flat 1.178-mile loop course consisting of a non-paved cinder track. The path winds through Waid Park, along the Pigg River, and around many of the athletic fields at Waid. Challenge yourself to as many miles as you can complete in 24 hours; achieve something extraordinary. ($)

  • 1 p.m. — Ceremony in Remembrance of March 7th March in Selma hosted by the Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to be held at The Dumas Center (108 Henry St. NW, Roanoke). All are welcome at this ceremony, which will remember the nonviolent peaceful march that began in Selma and the violent attack by police that ensued, against the marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The Chapter will honor the participants in those events, which became known as Bloody Sunday. A family-fun afternoon of music and make-believe designed just for kids (and the grown-ups who love them).   • 3/18, 7 p.m. — Live music: Big Richard at the Grandin Theatre (1310 Grandin Rd. SW, Roanoke). Bluegrass band Big Richard makes music for the 21st century’s twisted cultural unease. Their latest album Pet, out this February on Signature Sounds, is a fierce, provocative, rejoinder to what troubles them and the world right now. It was recorded live to tape in order to capture the fervor of their live shows. ($)

  • Through 3/22 — Jacob Smith — Thoughts and Prayers at Olin Hall Galleries at Roanoke College (240 High St., Salem). Using furniture, artifacts, dioramas, and sculptural elements, Smith’s work interrogates the forces that shape identity: gender roles, religious dogma, political propaganda, militarism, and consumerism. "Thoughts & Prayers" is a space for speculation, satire, and critique—a place to see the world not as it is, but as it might appear from the outside looking in.
  • Through 9/27 — “CHANGE” at Art on 1st (300 1st St. SW, Roanoke). Change is a constant. We experience it through shifting seasons, changing landscapes, and transitions in our lives like moves, new schools or jobs, personal growth, and even the small change we carry in our pockets. We’ve invited artists to reflect on what change means to them and create a work that expresses their personal interpretation of transformation, transition, or evolution.
