America is Turning 250, the Least of These Sparks Debate, and Don't Get Caught on Camera on I-81
Good morning and thank you for subscribing to The Roanoke Rambler.
This week, we mark the nations 250-year anniversary and look at the Roanoke Valley's historical impact on America, we attended zoning hearings that effect business owners and the homeless, and we also explore what new speed cameras on i-81 mean for the Roanoke Valley.
First, we report from downtown Roanoke, where the city’s enforcement action against The Least of These Ministry has opened a larger debate over homelessness, public space, business concerns and what compassion should look like in the heart of the city.
We also examine the new speed cameras coming to I-81, where a 30-day warning period is now underway before $100 civil penalties begin. The cameras are being billed as a work-zone safety measure, but they also raise a practical question for thousands of local drivers: how much could one commute cost if habits do not change?
And as the nation prepares to mark America’s 250th anniversary, we look at how the Roanoke Valley is planning to celebrate, commemorate and interpret that milestone locally, from public events to the deeper history that shaped this region.
