On July 19, the world’s biggest soccer tournament will conclude at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, crowning the 2026 men’s world champion after weeks of competition across North America.
Whether you manage to purchase a ticket to one of the sold-out matches or plan to watch from the comfort of your couch, millions of fans across the United States are expected to tune in as the tournament reaches its final stretch.
This year’s competition has already made history. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 national teams instead of the traditional 32 and the first to be hosted by three, Canada, Mexico, and the United States, across 16 venues.
The men’s World Cup, held every four years, dates back to 1930, when Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the inaugural final. Brazil remains the tournament’s most successful nation with five titles, while Argentina entered this year’s competition as the defending champion.
The United States previously hosted the World Cup in 1994. Thirty-two years later, the tournament has returned with an expanded format and a broader North American footprint, bringing matches to cities including Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Seattle and East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The tournament opened on June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 before more than 80,000 fans. The opening ceremony featured a performance by Shakira, setting the stage for a month of international competition.
Since then, players from around the globe have taken the field representing their countries, with several nations from the Global South delivering memorable performances and advancing deep into the tournament.
The first time that the World Cup was hosted in the US was in 1994, 32 years later, the global match returned to the North American country.
Not everyone, however, has been able to experience the World Cup in person.
Fans have voiced frustration over soaring travel costs, hotel prices and match tickets. Reports from multiple outlets, including Business Insider, have described the 2026 tournament as one of the most expensive World Cups to attend.
Category 1 tickets for the final reached nearly $11,000 during FIFA’s April public sale, placing the championship match well out of reach for many supporters. Transportation costs have also climbed. For the final, New Jersey Transit increased the round-trip fare between New York Penn Station and MetLife Stadium from $12.90 to $98, adding another expense for fans hoping to attend.
Fortunately, you don’t have to travel to New Jersey or spend thousands of dollars to enjoy the atmosphere.
For Roanoke soccer fans, several local venues offer the chance to catch the remaining matches surrounded by fellow supporters, good food and plenty of excitement.
If you're looking for a classic sports bar atmosphere, local restaurants and pubs throughout the Roanoke Valley offer large-screen televisions, game-day specials and menus filled with crowd favorites, from chicken tenders and burgers to shareable appetizers perfect for watching every goal.
For those who prefer a community gathering, the Grandin Theatre offers a different viewing experience. Instead of watching from a bar stool, fans can enjoy the action on the theater’s big screen alongside fellow soccer enthusiasts. Admission is free, making it an affordable option for families, groups of friends or anyone looking to experience the excitement in a larger setting.
If a neighborhood restaurant is more your style, The Village Grill in Grandin combines American comfort food with a relaxed atmosphere. Guests can enjoy burgers, sandwiches and other favorites while keeping up with the action. During the summer months, the outdoor patio provides another viewing option, and Tuesday matches pair well with the restaurant’s Taco Tuesday specials.
Fans looking for a livelier environment may also want to visit Peacock Alley at Hotel Roanoke. Declan McGettigan, Director of Food & Beverage is the visionary behind the initiative. He wanted to create an opportunity to bring cultures and borders together for a “global moment.” Soccer fans won't just experience the thrill of the games, but a welcoming space with fantastic hospitality.
“They can expect a lively, welcoming vibe that brings the electric energy of the World Cup straight into the heart of Roanoke. We’ve turned Peacock Alley into “FIFA Alley,” a fun, social gathering spot where lifelong fans, guests, families, and the public can cheer together on big screens, enjoy excellent food and drinks specials from The Pine Room & 1882 Lobby Bar, and celebrate all the action,” said McGettigan.
Better known as an event space, the venue transforms into a gathering place for sports fans during major events, offering plenty of room to cheer on your favorite team while special-game day food, drink specials like themed cocktails, and live entertainment.
“We wanted to create a special place right here in Roanoke where locals and visitors could experience that same magic together. FIFA Alley and the outdoor beer garden is our way of opening our doors and sharing great hospitality while celebrating one of the world’s biggest sporting events in a fun and spirited way,” said Gettigan.
Whether you’re joining a crowd at a local theater, gathering with friends at a neighborhood restaurant or cheering alongside fellow fans at a sports bar, you don’t have to be inside MetLife Stadium to experience the excitement of the world’s biggest soccer tournament.
With the final match set for July 19, there’s still time to grab your jersey, pick your favorite viewing spot and be part of the World Cup atmosphere right here in Roanoke.
“If you’re in the Roanoke area and want to watch the Final in one of the best possible ways, join us at The hotel. You’ll be surrounded by fellow fans in one of the city’s most iconic venues, soaking in every moment of what should be an unforgettable match. Come with friends, wear your colors, and be part of something bigger. It's a wonderful way to celebrate the finale of the World Cup,” said McGettigan.
